Write Fault Error/Virus Removal Strategies that You Can Take

“Write Fault Error” is a fake notification which appears on your screen when your computer is infected by Smart HDD Virus. It looks like it’s a genuine error appearing due to certain reasons. However, it is not true. The reason why you get it is that the bad guys want to provoke fear in your mind so that you would buy their fake system optimization program- ‘Smart HDD’. In short, it’s a scam.

Well, the bad news is that it puts your customized settings in an irrecoverable state. It won’t delete your files & documents but only hide them. It’s really undesirable though.
Let us see what (fake) message you will get on your screen-

“A Write command during the test has failed to complete. This may be due to media or read/ write error. The system generates an exception error when using a reference to an invalid system memory address.”

1. Remove Files
2. Remove Registry Entries

Remove Files

There can be plenty of files made by this virus on your hard disk. Remove all of them after disabling all Non-Microsoft startup & services items. The reason why I told you to disable these items is that they must not be running while you’ll attempt deleting them.

1. Click Start, select Run. Type MSCONFIG and press ENTER.

2. Click Startup tab, disable all items. Click Services tab, check-up Hide all Microsoft services box and disable all items.

3. Click Apply => OK and restart your computer immediately.

4. The next time Windows should boot without loading this fake virus.
5. Move to your desktop first. Delete the shortcut named System Check.lnk. (Where .lnk is the extension of shortcut files)
6. Click Start => Programs. Right click the System Check folder and delete it. It contains several shortcut files System Check.lnk, Uninstall System Check.lnk respectively which will be automatically deleted.

7. Click Start => Run. Type %CommonAppData% and press ENTER.
8. Do you see files with random numbers? (For example, 01.exe, 02.exe) If so, delete them.
9. Open Run box, type %AppData% => Microsoft => InternetExplorer => QuickLaunch.
10. Delete the shortcut link named SystemCheck.lnk.
11. Open Run box, type %Temp% and press ENTER.
12. Select all its contents and delete them.

Remove Registry Entries
Likewise there are many registry entries too which should be deleted to remove all data stored by this virus. Please backup your registry before changing anything in it; otherwise it may make your computer run improperly.
1. Again, make sure you have a registry backup to deal with uncertainties.
2. Click Start => Run. Type REGEDIT and press ENTER.

3. Open following registry path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER => Software => Microsoft => Internet Explorer => Main.
Delete the string namely Use “FormSuggest”. Or simply replace Yes with No.

4. Open the following path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER => Software => Microsoft => Windows => CurrentVersion => Policies => Associations
Delete this string- LowRiskFileTypes

5. Open the following path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER => Software => Microsoft => Windows => CurrentVersion => Policies => System
Delete this string- DisableTaskMgr

6. Open the following path-
HKEY_CURRENT_USER => Software => Microsoft => Windows => CurrentVersion => Explorer => Advanced
Delete these strings- Hidden and ShowSuperHidden.

7. Open following registry path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER => Software => Microsoft => Windows => CurrentVersion => Policies => ActiveDesktop
Delete this strings- NoChangingWallpaper

8. Open the following path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER => Software => Microsoft => Windows => CurrentVersion => Policies => Attachments
Delete this string- SaveZoneInformation

9. Open the following path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER => Software => Microsoft => Windows => CurrentVersion => Policies => Explorer
Delete this string- NoDesktop

10. Open the following path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER => Software => Microsoft => Internet Explorer => Download
Delete this string- CheckEXESignatures

11. Open following registry path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER => Software => Microsoft => Windows => CurrentVersion => Internet Settings
Delete these strings- CertificateRevocation and WarnOnBadCertRecving.

12. Open following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE => Software => Microsoft => Windows => CurrentVersion => Policies => System
Delete this string- DisableTaskMgr
